Best Kid Films Not 4 Kids

If you've ever happily toted your under 12 child into a seemingly innocuous film only to find yourself covering your baby's eyes and ears halfway through because YOU don't want to leave, this list is for you. (In no particular order.) Still a work in progress and I'm open to suggestions from the peanut gallery via the comments.

  1. Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988). This live action/animated film starring Bob Hoskins as a toon-hating detective, Eddie Valiant, dragged into helping a lovable animated rabbit named Roger features Christopher Lloyd at his wackiest. The PG rating implies kid suitability, but by today's standards I'd label this one PG-13 because Eddie drinks like a fish through half the movie and the sexual references, especially around Jessica Rabbit (who's "not bad...just drawn that way"), are a bit too much for anyone under 10. (My 11-year-old squirmed through several scenes.) However, this film is truly a classic and completely unique.
  2. Time Bandits (1981). A young boy is accidentally dragged into era-jumping thievery by a band of dwarves who accidentally pick him up during their quest to become rich the easy way. On the surface the PG-rating fits, but the cast of largely Monty Python players should be a dead giveaway that parental supervision may be required. Funny at first, the film eventually becomes fairly dark and is one of the earliest "kid" films to kill a main character a young watcher would likely have grown to like. The ending was also fairly traumatic for modern pre-teens viewing it the first time. Best to treat this one as PG-13 while you secretly laugh into your adult beverage. (See original trailer.)
  3. Beetlejuice (1988) Overall, this film had the potential to be attractive to tweens & pre-teens. Unfortunately, the 80's worked a little too hard to bring back the 60's and sexualized EVERYTHING. Or maybe the film-makers just knew nothing about the PG crowd. Aside from the whorehouse scene in the graveyard, this film may be a bit too scary for kids under 13.
